This week marks a special milestone for one of STEPS’ most dedicated team members. Jess, a STEPS Pathways College graduate, is celebrating her 5-year anniversary with the STEPS community.

For almost three years, Jess has been working at STEPS Café on George, a STEPS social business which is open to the public and designed to teach students cooking and hospitality skills while raising funds for STEPS Pathways College.

Jess first joined the STEPS family in April 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdowns. As a Day Program student at STEPS Pathways College, she began her journey from her home in Brisbane, joining Zoom classes alongside students from all across Australia.

“I was quite surprised to find out that many of the people were in completely different parts of the country,” Jess reflected.

“When I finally came to campus in June of 2020, I was just relieved and excited to meet everyone face-to-face and be more social. I was bored of isolating during the lockdowns and ready to make friends.”

During her time at STEPS Pathways College, Jess developed life skills, built her confidence, and formed lasting friendships.

“STEPS taught me how to develop a routine that works for me, and I still use the skills I learned every day at home,” Jess said.

When STEPS Café on George opened in 2021, Jess become one of the first employees – and she’s been working there ever since. After graduating in 2022, Jess stayed on as a paid team member and continued to thrive.

“I love working at the Café. I get to prep food, make coffee, and talk to interesting people,” Jess said.

“We have regulars that I really love to see, and this year has been the best so far. We have a lot of fun changes happening in the Café and the menu has gotten even better. It’s also been a lot busier!”

Hospitality Support Trainer Ian Jacobsen recalls meeting Jess on his first visit to STEPS Café on George.

“She didn’t know I was applying to be her boss, but she was so kind and professional – it really stood out to me,” Ian said.

“I believe that Jess has everything she needs to be an amazing manager one day, and I’m just happy I get to be a small part of that journey for her.”

Support Trainer Stephanie Ruddie agrees, praising Jess’ great attitude and dedication to STEPS Café on George and its success.

“Jess is loyal, responsible, and an amazing person to work with,” Stephanie said.

“She makes every single customer feel welcome and valued. She remembers their names, their orders, who they usually visit the Café with, what they spoke about during their last visit – it’s very impressive and adds so much to the warm, community-centric approach STEPS has.”

Jess’ journey is a shining example of what is possible for young people when they have holistic support and encouragement to reach their goals. Congratulations Jess – the STEPS community is proud of you, and we can’t wait to see what your future holds!
